There is a big difference. Look at when Youkilis has played left field. He is an exceptional corner infielder but it was ugly when he played left field. Chances are, it will be uglier if Gonzalez plays right field. True, Adam Dunn is not a good outfielder, but he is accustomed to playing the outfield in the majors whereas Gonzalez isn’t. Let him get a shot in the OF. Just a few games based on who is pitching for the opponent. Put it this way....no way he can be worse than Adam Dunn. Besides we all love it when some non pitcher comes in to toss an inning. Gonzalez seems interested and maybe another blow out game the next few nights Tito might get him out in spacious RF for an inning or two. Go for it. Let him get a shot in the OF. Comment on Dice-K was worth the $103 million investment by Rick http://www.bosoxbanter.com/2011/06/dice-k-was-worth-the-103-million-investment/#comment-810 Rick Fri, 03 Jun 2011 21:21:47 +0000 http://www.bosoxbanter.com/?p=492#comment-810 The general consensus in the wonderful world of hindsight is this contract was a dud. Fangraphs had the value somewhere around 44M but like some of the metric statements like that need to venture a bit deeper. Start first and foremost with the Boston baseball psychic. What value is placed on a championship? Dice was a key ingredient in 2007 and he had two nice games in the playoff and WS run. If you told me or better yet Theo and John Henry that they could fork out 103M for a player, get only one year- forget more - out of him and win a championship would they do it? No brainer. The championship lust factor runs deep in RSN. A "bad" FA signing is one where you see poor performance (Drew, Lugo, et al) and this was not the case since performance was clearly linked to injury. Dice had one one significant injury in Japan and recovered nicely so previous history was not present as say Pedro with the Mets. If you go into some of the history on posting boards as I have you will see "What a steal!" mentioned by the same folks who now claim this was a disaster. Now Dice certainly had his own contributions to his downfall from questionable training methods to the WBC and then just toss in how frustrating the guy can be and it is easy to bid farewell but when he was in one piece he showed he could significantly contribute. Comment on Red Sox should fill Dice-K’s rotation spot internally and not make a trade by Red Sox http://www.bosoxbanter.com/2011/06/red-sox-should-fill-dice-ks-rotation-spot-internally-and-not-make-a-trade/#comment-808 Red Sox Fri, 03 Jun 2011 19:48:22 +0000 http://www.bosoxbanter.com/?p=484#comment-808 I agree that Wakefield is no longer dependable long term, but giving him and Aceves spot starts would suffice until Doubront is stretched out, if that is Boston's plan. I imagine the Sox are exploring trades, but Iwould be surprised if they gave up more prospects after giving up so much (understandably) to get Adrian Gonzalez. I am comfortable with giving Aceves, Wakefield and Doubront a chance. Of course, this is dependent on Lackey. If he doesn't return to form, then the Sox will have two spots to fill. He and the entire team seemed to be pretty flat on Monday evening. If he returns to form, with a lifetime 16-2 record as a reliever/starter, he is my choice to fit into Dice-K's slot until he proves he cannot win at least 50% of the time. Regrettably, Wakefield has been in and out, up and down, for the better part of the last two years, so he cannot be expected to pitch with any consistency as a starter. He too was hammered pretty well by the White Sox on Tuesday. The Sox have Aceves and Wakefield and both have performed reasonably well for the bottom of the rotation. The Sox also signed the Pitching Pinata Millwood as a throw it against the wall and see it it sticks. What has to happened to set the Sox wheels of fate back on track is Mr. Lackey to actually pick up to a tad better than 2010 and then you can state a solid three and a half exists and let Wake and Aceves duel it out for #5. Worse case scenario for Boston is extended down time for one of the "Big Three." Doubront I have little faith in at this juncture especially after another DL stint. The Japanese "Mr. T." impressed or worse yet baffled no one in his brief Boston sojourn. The worse moves are panic moves.
